Twenty people are dead and four others are injured following a massacre at a cockfighting arena in Mexico.
The mass shooting occurred at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday at an arena in Las Tinajas where dozens of people had gathered to watch the bloody competition, according to a statement released by the Attorney General of the State of Michoacán.
Investigators responded to the scene and found the "lifeless bodies" of 16 men and three women. Five others -- four men and one woman -- were injured, but one man died on the way to the hospital.
In processing the crime scene, officials located more than 100 shell casings and a .40 mm caliber grenade. Authorities also seized 15 vehicles as part of the investigation.
According to the Attorney General, a truck stolen from a frying company arrived in the area as the event was wrapping up for the night and several armed people wearing camouflage clothing got out. At the same time, a passenger truck was used to carry out a blockade outside the arena.
The gunmen entered the venue and started shooting. After the attack, they fled in different vehicles. Authorities are still working to identify those responsible.
"There are indications that the attack involved a confrontation between criminal groups," the federal Public Safety Department said in a statement, according to CBS News.
Michoacán has been the location of a bloody turf war between Mexican drug cartels since 2006, police say. In Michoacán, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel is fighting a turf war against the United Cartels, a collection of local gangs.
The violence has even threatened the avocado supply in the United States. Last month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture briefly suspended imports of avocados from Mexico after an inspector at a plant in Michoacán was threatened.
