Convenience store chain 7-Eleven is looking to make some serious changes by the end of the year.

7-Eleven's Tokyo-based parent company Seven & I Holdings revealed in its most recent earnings report that it plans to close 444 "underperforming" locations by the end of 2024.

The company said the underperformance was due to slowing sales fueled by inflation, along with a decrease in foot traffic and decline in spending on cigarettes and convenience items.

The closures are expected to take place at locations across the U.S. and Canada. However, a specific list of stores slated for closure wasn't released.

While 444 sounds like a lot, it's barely a drop in the bucket for 7-Eleven. The closures make up just over 3% of the chain's more than 13,000 stores in the U.S. and Canada.

Still, Seven & I Holdings said it is confident the closures will help business "return to growth in 2025 and beyond."
