UPPER DARBY, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Upper Darby police are looking for answers after a newborn baby is found dead on a sidewalk in broad daylight, leaving a community shaken.
Neighbors stood around 69th Street and Patterson Avenue Thursday evening in shock, learning of the news.
Authorities did not initially release many details, but Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt said they got the call around 4 p.m. Thursday about a baby in a trash bag.
"The bag was at that bottom of the alley right there, so that’s what we have right now," Bernhardt said.
"What we have determined that it is a newborn deceased, and detectives are working on gathering some video and speaking to witnesses."
The state of Pennsylvania has a safe haven law, stating that anyone who is unable to care for a child can leave it in the care of a hospital.
"Any medical facility, you can call 911, plenty of places to drop a baby off," Bernhardt added.
