COVID-19 cases are surging in states where vaccination rates remain among the lowest, including Alabama where more than 50% of the state’s ICU patients have COVID-19.
To make matters worse, the shortage of ICU beds in the state continues to grow.
A report from the Hospital Association found that the state has 1,712 ICU patients, but only 1,531 staffed ICU beds. So now, hospitals are treating ICU patients all over their hospitals as beds continue to fill.
Alabama has 2,777 patients hospitalized with COVID, including 2,724 adults and 53 pediatric patients. More than half are in critical conditions, requiring an ICU bed.
Of the adults hospitalized with the virus, 84% are unvaccinated, 4% are partially vaccinated, and 12% are fully vaccinated.
Alabama currently sits among the lowest states in vaccination rates, with only 39.4% of the state’s population being fully vaccinated and 50.7% of the population partially vaccinated, according to data from the Mayo Clinic.
