According to multiple reports, a man in Altoona, Pennsylvania is being held by authorities in connection to the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last week. The suspect was identified later by police as 26-year-old Luigi Mangione.
ABC News reports that man is being held for questioning and say the suspect has a gun that is similar that was used last week that killed Thompson. He also was reportedly using a fake ID.
Mangione, who has not been charged with a crime, is a prep school and Ivy League graduate who used X to talk about artificial intelligence and listed books on Goodreads on a wide-range of topics, including the Unabomber. The New York Post reported he was caught at a McDonald's with the gun and a manifesto that "railed against the US healthcare industry, including over its enormous profits and alleged shady motives."
Thompson was killed in broad daylight in Manhattan last Wednesday.
The words “deny,” “defend” and “depose” were found written on the shell casings recovered from the scene of the shooting at West 54th Street and Sixth Avenue.
Multiple photos and videos of the alleged suspect have been released in the days following the shooting.
Brian Thompson, 50, was gunned down around 6:45 a.m. right outside the entrance to the hotel as he headed to an annual meeting with investors, where he'd been scheduled to speak. Surveillance video shows the gunman walking up behind him and opening fire, striking him in the back and leg.
Police believe it was a targeted killing.
