Apple News has announced that it will continue its expansion of offering a local news experience in three new cities, including Charlotte, Miami, and Washington D.C.
Apple's news service offers curated feeds from its editors to create personalized news experiences. Apple first started focusing on local news in cities like Los Angeles in 2020 in an effort to offer more personal stories to its users.
Apple's current list of cities that can receive Apple's local news feature includes the Bay Area, Charlotte, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Sacramento, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.
Apple said in its press release that the service will feature a broad "coverage of topics that are important to local communities, from restaurant openings and real estate trends to big policy decisions."
In the new cities, readers will have access to top publications like Axios Charlotte, the Charlotte Observer, Eater Miami, the Miami Herald, DCist, Washington, the Washington Post, and more.
Those who use Apple News in the added cities will receive a curated list called "Read Local" of local stories every Thursday from Apple's editors.
Lauren Kern, the editor-in-chief of Apple News, shared that the news service is looking to offer and the importance the company sees in local news.
"At Apple News, we know that access to trusted local news is critical for communities, and an important resource for a national audience as well," Kern said in the press release. "We are committed to working with local publishers across the country to support their journalism and offer our users local coverage in the cities and regions they care about."
While the cities that can receive local news are still small, the company shared that it plans to expand the local news features to additional cities and regions over time so that readers across the country can get all of their news in one spot.
