Despite some elected officials criticizing President Joe Biden for his refusal to step aside in the 2024 presidential election, others continue to stand by the president, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
Sanders, who recently appeared on “Face the Nation,” shared on Sunday that while questions have arisen about Biden’s age following his shocking debate against former President Donald Trump, his policy remains resolute.
“Biden is old. He’s not as articulate as he once was. I wish he could jump up the steps on Air Force One, he can’t,” Sanders said. “What we have got to focus on is policy — whose policies have and will benefit the vast majority of the people in this country?”
The independent senator, who was once Biden’s adversary for the Democratic nominee, has worked closely with the president and refused to call on him to step down as the party’s nominee.
Sanders instead said that Biden “can clearly defeat Donald Trump,” whom he said was the “most dangerous president in the history of this country.”
While many have focused on Biden’s age over the last few months, Sanders is instead pointing to the president’s record, praising him for his pro-union stance, efforts to protect abortion, fight climate change, and his infrastructure bill.
Sanders did offer some criticism of Biden’s campaign, saying that it needed to lay out Biden’s plan for the next four years.
“The American people want an agenda for the next four years that speaks to the needs of the working class of this country,” Sanders said. “So frankly, I don’t think the president has brought that agenda forward.”
Sanders says that with issues of income and wealth inequality, Medicare, Social Security, and more, Biden should take a stand and outline his first few weeks in office.
“He’s got to promise the American people that if they give him a Democratic Senate, a Democratic House, reelect him, he’s gonna do that in the first 100 days,” Sanders said. “That’s what I think the American people want.”
