President Joe Biden is expected to announce new policy measures on Monday centered around firearms, specifically 3D-printed guns known as “ghost guns.”
The regulations are expected to be implemented through executive orders as the concern around ghost guns grows across the nation and in areas of high gun violence, CNN reported.
With gun violence on the rise throughout the pandemic in major cities, advocates have called on Biden to take action amid continued school and workplace shootings.
The move from Biden is expected to make it more difficult for people to build or acquire ghost guns, which are extremely dangerous due to them being untraceable and made of plastic, meaning metal detectors do not pick up on them.
Several major cities have reported recovering mass numbers of the weapons that are unserialized and don’t allow for law enforcement agencies to track them.
Biden is also expected to name a new replacement nominee to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, a position that has long sat empty.
ATF veteran David Chipman was the last nominee for the seat, but he was met with strong opposition from GOP members looking to protect the right to bear arms.
Biden’s proposed fiscal year 2023 budget was unveiled in March and included $1.7 billion in funding for ATF to expand multijurisdictional gun trafficking strike forces, NBC News reported. The move could also increase the regulation of the firearms industry.
The White House is expected to make its announcement on the president’s moves to regulate weapons at 2:15 p.m. from the Rose Garden. Vice President Kamala Harris and Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco are expected to speak.
