The body of a missing 10-year-old girl in western Wisconsin was recovered by local authorities Monday morning. Police shared that they are now investigating her death as a murder.

The girl, identified by police as Lily Peters, was initially reported missing Sunday night in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.

Chippewa Falls Police Chief Matthew Kelm gave the update on the discovery of her body during a press conference while fighting back tears.

“We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Lily Peters during this tragic time,” Kelm said.

Peters had been visiting her aunt and took her bike to travel to her home. Her family notified the police that she was missing when she was not heard from.

While searching the area for her, police reportedly found her bike near a walking trail not far from the aunt’s residence.

Kelm shared that the investigation is active, and several agencies are looking into what happened to her and who killed her.
