California has 7 earthquakes in 8.5 hours

California was rocked by seven earthquakes over the span of eight-and-a-half hours on Sunday morning, and four of them were ranked as having a magnitude of 3.0 or higher.

The first earthquake hit about two miles northwest of Orinda, near Berkely, at 1:30 a.m. local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was one of the weakest of the day with a magnitude of 2.5. People in the area reported very weak shaking but no damage.

The second earthquake hit two hours later about five miles northeast of Alum Rock, in east San Jose, at 3:35 a.m. local time, the USGS said. It was one of the strongest of the day, with a magnitude of 3.4. The quake was felt widely in the area, but no significant damage was reported.

Less than an hour later, the third earthquake hit in Northern California about two miles northeast of Almanor, at 4:20 a.m. local time. The quake had a magnitude of 3.3, according to the USGS. A few reports of weak shaking were received but no damage was reported.

The fourth earthquake hit about an hour-and-a-half later in the San Francisco Bay Area, about five miles southwest of Antioch at 6:05 a.m. local time. It was among the weakest of the day with a magnitude of 2.5 and was likely not felt, the USGS said.

About 30 minutes later, the fifth earthquake hit in the Eastern Sierra, about nine miles west of Toms Place at 6:38 a.m. local time. It was one of the weaker quakes of the day, with a magnitude of 3.0, per the USGS. People in the area reported feeling weak shaking but no damage was reported.

Two hours later, the sixth earthquake hit in the San Joaquin Valley in central California, about 12 miles southwest of Los Banos at 8:42 a.m. local time. The earthquake was among the weakest of the bunch, with a magnitude of 2.5, and was likely not felt, according to the USGS. No damage was reported.

The seventh earthquake hit just over an hour later about two miles southwest of South Pasadena at 9:56 a.m. local time. It was one of the strongest quakes of the day, with a magnitude of 3.4, the USGS said. The earthquake was widely felt, but no damage was reported.

No injuries were reported from any of the earthquakes.
