A police officer in North Carolina has been placed on administrative leave after he accidentally shot his son in the head.
The 15-year-old was rushed to the hospital and is now fighting to stay alive.
The incident happened just after 4:30 p.m. on December 27 at the family's home in Onslow County. The teenager sustained a life-threatening injury from a single gunshot wound to the head.
Other details surrounding the shooting have not been released.
The unidentified officer is a member of the Jacksonville Police Department. He has been placed on administrative leave while the Onslow County Sheriff's Office conducts an investigation, according to District Attorney Ernie Lee.
"This is a tragic event and this matter remains under investigation," Lee said in a statement. "The reports, statements, and other evidence from the investigation will be provided to this office to determine what actions, if any, will be taken."
Authorities said the shooting appears to be an accident. It's not clear if charges will be filed.
It's also not clear if the weapon used in the shooting was the officer's department-issued handgun.
The teen remains in critical condition.
