Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis shared his thoughts on the news that former President Donald Trump was the target of a Department of Justice investigation into Jan. 6, saying he thought Trump should have been more forceful in 2021.
“I think it was shown how he was in the White House and didn’t do anything while things were going on. He should have come out more forcefully,” DeSantis said at a press conference in South Carolina on Tuesday.
DeSantis also shared criticism of the DOJ, saying that it has been weaponized against certain individuals and that it wasn’t right.
“But to try to criminalize that, that’s a different issue entirely,” DeSantis said. “We want to be in a situation where you don’t have one side just constantly trying to put the other side in jail, and that, unfortunately, is what we’re seeing now.”
Trump shared the news of him being the target of the investigation on Tuesday, saying he was notified by special counsel Jack Smith.
“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an arrest and indictment,” Trump said.
If it were to lead to charges, it would mark the third time that Trump has faced criminal charges and just the latest legal trouble for the former president.
In April, he was charged in an alleged hush money scheme, and in June, he was charged for his handling of potentially classified documents upon leaving office.
