In what officials are calling a freak accident, an 80-year-old Massachusetts woman is dead after her vehicle rolled backward in her driveway, pinning her underneath.
The incident happened last Wednesday in North Reading, about 20 miles north of Boston.
According to police, the unidentified woman had parked her Buick Regal in her driveway, got out and walked behind it. The car then rolled backward, striking the woman and pinning her underneath the vehicle.
Officials rushed to the woman's home after getting the 911 call and found her trapped under the vehicle. After rescue crews freed her and transported her to a local hospital, she was pronounced dead.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said the incident is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Sections to determine what caused the car to roll.
Although an investigation into the woman's death is ongoing, "no foul play is suspected," North Reading Chief of Police Mark Zimmerman said in a statement.
