The two-month manhunt for an escaped murderer in Washington D.C. has come to an end.

The U.S. Marshal's Service took fugitive Christopher Haynes back into custody on Thursday after he was found in Oxon Hill, Maryland, a suburb just southeast of downtown, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Details of his capture have not been disclosed, though it appears investigators may have received a tip from the public.

"Finding Christopher Haynes remained a top priority for the Metropolitan Police Department," the agency said in a statement. "MPD extends deep gratitude to the members of the community who assisted in providing information regarding Haynes' whereabouts."

Haynes is accused of killing 33-year-old Brent Hayward on August 12. After allegedly shooting Hayward in the head, Haynes went on the run. It took several weeks, but the Capitol Area Regional Fugitive Task Force eventually located and arrested Haynes in Manassas, Virginia on September 6.

That same day, he escaped from custody. According to police, Haynes was transported to the hospital after complaining of ankle pain from a pre-existing injury while he was being processed. Despite two officers being assigned to the hospital detail, Haynes went free.

"While an officer was changing out Haynes' handcuffs at the hospital to cuff one hand to a gurney located in a hallway, Haynes physically assaulted the officer and fled from the hospital with one handcuff still attached to his right wrist," police said. "Both officers chased after Haynes but were unable to catch him."

Haynes is now facing charges associated with his escape in addition to being charged in Hayward's murder.
