The current national average price of regular gas is $3.51 per gallon, according to AAA, and it's expected to go up even more this year as a result of warmer weather and increased summer travel.

Patrick de Haan, GasBuddy head of petroleum analysis, told Fox Business' "Varney and Co." on Monday why he believes gas prices will keep rising this year.

"All of the factors are going to point to an upward trajectory when we start seeing the transition, warmer weather, refineries doing maintenance," de Haan said. "All the ingredients are there to hit four bucks a gallon."

The White House and other Democratic lawmakers are considering a "federal gas holiday," according to The Washington Post. It would potentially pause the gas tax in an attempt to slow down rising prices.

The proposed bill would suspend the gas tax by about 18 cents per gallon for the rest of 2022.

De Haan said that prices are still going to increase, even if the government pauses the gas tax.

"We’re going to see a lot higher prices in the months ahead," de Haan said. "Even if the Democrats do go ahead and give us a whopping 5% coupon."

The national average price for regular gas was $2.51 per gallon last year at this time, according to AAA.

California has the highest current average price per gallon of regular gas at $4.719, and is the only state in the contiguous United States with an average of over $4 per gallon. Hawaii's average price for regular gas is currently $4.487 per gallon.

Alaska, Arizona, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Washington are all in the top group of states with an average price of over $3.705 per gallon, but under $4.

Missouri has the lowest average price for regular gas at $3.179 per gallon. Arkansas, Mississippi, and Oklahoma are the other states where the average is less than $3.20 per gallon.
