From spray-painting a stolen tractor-trailer, to being in public without pants and driving right through the front door of a sheriff’s office – there are a lot of “dumb” crime stories out there. Just Google “Florida Man” and see for yourself.
Each week, “Something Offbeat” dives into an unusual headline. This week, the team couldn’t choose just one.
Northwestern University criminology professor Kaitlin Devaney joined the show to explain why some criminals make seemingly simple mistakes, what role the complexity of our criminal justice system plays, and the impact economics has on crime.
“I think a lot of times you look at criminals and people who committed crimes as this line between good and evil,” she said. “And in reality, I completely disagree... I think people do bad things and I think they sit with those questions themselves, and they go through the same process that we might.”
