A new Facebook algorithm is endeavoring to inform users that they’ve been exposed to “extremist content.”

The presence of the new warnings was first reported by Disclose.tv.

It’s the latest effort by the social media giant to curb groups that use the platform for propaganda that glorifies violence and attempts to radicalize the disenfranchised.

The new warning targets users who might be interacting with groups deemed troubling, offering support and asking for users of the app to self-report when they find content that could be deemed “extremist” in nature.

A report in March by the nonprofit advocacy group Avaaz identified 267 Facebook groups that spread content glorifying violence amid the run-up to the 2020 Presidential election. The content was viewed by a combined 32 million users.

The new warnings appear to be the latest effort by Facebook to self-police its platform, or rather have its users self-police the platform.
