A mother and son lost control of their car while traveling along the Florida Turnpike in Miami Friday, dumping them in an alligator-infested pond.
In an attempt to help the mother and son, witnesses and police rescue teams quickly dove into the water to help get them out, WSVN reported.

After cops discovered the extra threat lurking in the pond, they positioned snipers around the rescuers to stop any potential attacks, according to the New York Post.
The mother, 80-year-old Nieves Matos, and her son, 56-year-old Mario Laza, lost control of their vehicle and ended up inside the pond on Friday.
Snipers could be seen outside the pond with guns aimed at the alligator-infested waters, but luckily they didn’t need to fire a shot.
The mother and son were pulled from the river, and Matos survived. However, Laza was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
