Ford is recalling nearly a half-million vehicles to fix an issue with the electrical system that could cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.
The recall affects certain 2021-2024 Bronco Sport and 2022-2023 Maverick vehicles, according to a recall notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The automaker says the vehicles are equipped with body and power train control modules that might fail to detect a low battery charge.
An undetected low battery charge could lead to some electrical accessories such as hazard lights not functioning properly or cause a loss of drive power in affected vehicles, according to the NHTSA.
If a vehicle fails to detect a low battery during a drive cycle, it may be unable to restart after an auto start/stop event or experience a stall while coming to a stop at low speed, both of which increase the risk of a crash, the automaker said.
Approximately 402,978 Bronco Sports and 53,587 Mavericks are included in the recall.
Ford said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue, though there are three unverified reports of fire and two property damage claims. The automaker said it is also aware of 917 warranty reports, 11 field reports, and 54 customer complaints regarding the problem.
Ford will inform owners of recalled vehicles by mid-May and dealers will recalibrate the body control module and power train control module, free of charge.
