Frozen shakes sold to nursing homes recalled after 11 deaths tied to listeria

A recall has been issued for frozen shakes sold to nursing homes and long-term care facilities after an outbreak of listeria was linked to 11 deaths.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration shared the news of the listeria outbreak in a recall notice last week, noting that the supplemental shakes are sold under the Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial brands.

According to the FDA, the shakes are responsible for at least 38 people falling ill in 21 states, with 37 hospitalizations and 11 deaths.

The outbreak includes cases that date back to 2018 but remains ongoing to this day. In 2024 and 2025, the shakes are responsible for 20 of the cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The FDA is continuing to investigate the outbreak at this time.

Listeria symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. They can start to pop up within two weeks of eating contaminated food, the FDA says on its website.

Those most vulnerable are pregnant women, newborns, adults aged 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems.
