Maurice Reginald Shepperson, 36, of Las Vegas, tested positive for the novel coronavirus in July and battled it for a month, according to USA Today. Shepperson died of complications from the virus on Tuesday, Aug. 10, his mother, Dawn Shepperson, told the publication.
Southwest Airlines sent a statement to Fox News confirming the passing of Shepperson.
"We are heartbroken over the loss; the Southwest Family is supporting each other, and our Employee's family, during this difficult time," the airline said to Fox. "Out of respect for Reggie's family, we do not have additional details to share."
Dawn shared how quickly everything happened once Shepperson fell ill.
"It hurt me so bad because it was just so quick," she told USA Today. "I didn't have time to really even acknowledge what is going on."
Dawn shared the efforts that he took to keep himself safe during the pandemic, including wearing a mask, cleaning surfaces, and washing his hands.
Now a GoFundMe has been created to help the Shepperson family cover the cost of the funeral arrangements.
"Reggie was a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines, and he loved his job! His personality, wit and humor were just a few characteristics that everyone adored," Shepperson's friend Marcia Hildreth captioned the fundraising campaign. "He was one of the kindest, most giving people I've ever known. If you needed him, he'd be there with no questions asked. Now he needs you to help make his transition a bit easier on his mom, Dawn, whom he loved dearly."
