SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – While Gen Z, Gen X, millennials and baby boomers may seem to be worlds apart, they can agree on one thing. Relationships are complicated.
This week on Audacy’s podcast “It’s Generational” a panel of guests representing each generation get real about their relationship challenges and successes.
John Evans, a baby boomer and longtime journalist who recently retired from KCBS Radio in San Francisco; Gen Xer journalist, critic, author and podcast host Virginia Heffernan; Kendra Austin, a millennial influencer, writer and model and Michelle Chubb, a Gen Z influencer, model and activist, were on the panel.
They dive into what’s changed on the dating scene from the 1960s to now, including the sexual liberation movement, 90s experimentation, online dating and the rise in ethical non-monogamy.
“In the nineties we were obsessed with our picture of the ordinary person... trapped in their life who needed to be shocked out of it,” Heffernan explained.
“As a generation I think they need to know what love is,” said Chubb of her peers. “They need to fall in love with love. And in order to get at that, you need to love yourself first.”
Dr. Raquel Peel, psychology lecturer at the University of Southern Queensland also joined the show to explain why relationships can be so hard, no matter what generation you’re from. Check out some of her research here.
“So, what the data is showing me is that regardless of age, group or generation, as humans, we do tend to sabotage relationships, work relationships or even peer relationships,” Peel said.
