Police officers who showed up on the scene of a house fire in Pennsylvania ended up in a shootout with someone who was taking shots at them from outside the burning home.

The incident happened Monday night in West Nantmeal Township, about 45 miles west of Philadelphia, according to reports.

Pennsylvania State Police troopers responded to the fire and found the home fully engulfed in flames. As they approached the home, troopers encountered the unidentified suspect standing in the driveway with a gun, WGAL reported.

When troopers ordered the man to drop his weapon, he began shooing at them. Troopers returned fire and struck the man in the leg. Police noted that multiple shots were fired during the incident.

The suspect was arrested and transported to a local hospital. He was reported in critical but stable condition.

No troopers were injured. The trooper who fired the shot has been placed on administrative leave while the incident remains under investigation, per department policy.

As of Tuesday afternoon, State Police investigators still hadn't figured out why the man was shooting at the officers or what started the fire.
