The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that it would be investigating the rental car company Hertz for allegedly renting vehicles that have been recalled without first fixing the issues.
The NHTSA, which is a federal agency responsible for all auto safety regulations, says that if Hertz is renting unfixed recalled vehicles, then it is violating vehicle safety laws.
The investigation into the rental car company will include auditing Hertz’s 2018, 2019, and 2020 recall records, according to the NHTSA posting.
The agency shared that it will specifically examine Ford and Nissan models that were under recall notices at the time.
The NHTSA said that it first started reviewing information involving Hertz renting recalled vehicles in late 2021.
“Information gathered by the agency to date, including from vehicle manufacturers, suggests repairs required under multiple NHTSA safety recalls were not made prior to the rental of such affected vehicles to Hertz customers,” NHTSA said in a statement.
