Hillshire Farm has announced a recall for thousands of pounds of smoked sausage after it was discovered that the meat could contain “extraneous materials,” most notably bone fragments.
The recall for Hillshire Farm’s smoked sausage was announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.
The agency shared that the company would be recalling nearly 15,876 pounds of blended meat and poultry sausage products produced on June 14, 2023, because they may contain bone fragments.
The product that consumers should keep an eye out for comes in 14-ounce packages labeled “Hillshire Farm Smoked Sausage Made With Pork, Turkey, Beef.”
Retailers in California, Maryland, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia sold the now recalled product.
Packages affected by the recall have lot codes “EST. 756A 20 19:00:00 through 21:59:59 and EST. 756A 21 19:00:00 through 21:59:59.” They also have a use-by date of Nov. 11, 2023.
After Hillshire received complaints from customers about the bone fragments in the affected product, it quickly contacted the FSIS.
So far, there has only been one injury related to the recall, as one consumer suffered an “oral injury” after eating the sausage. The FSIS noted that there were no illnesses or hospitalizations.
Those who have purchased the sausages are encouraged to throw them away or return them to where they were purchased for a refund.
