Running into a horse isn’t probably something you’re expecting on your next flight. However, it may be at least a little more possible that you think.
Late last year, the Associated Press reported that a horse had gotten loose on a plane from New York City to Belgium. Thankfully, it was a cargo plane.
Lyndee du Toit, the CEO of the Johannesburg office of Air Charter Service, is familiar with getting large animals – including lions, elephants and rhinoceros – on planes. She joined “Something Offbeat” to dive into this story, and to explain how to transport those animals safely.
While du Toit said that animal escapes on planes are uncommon, they’re not unheard of.
“I read an article, probably last year... where this brown bear had, escaped his crate. And this animal was actually in the lower hold of a passenger aircraft, so it was small enough to transport at the bottom,” she said.
