Snap Inc., the parent company of the popular social media app Snapchat could owe you money if you live in the state of Illinois after a recent settlement.

The company reached a $35 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit that accused Snap of violating the state's Biometric Information Privacy Act.

The suit, "Boone, et al. v. Snap Inc.," accuses the company of collecting "biometric data" without the user's consent.

The legislation involves the use of facial recognition technology, and the suit includes residents of Illinois who used lenses or filters on the app between November 2015 and now.

The suit says that the issue revolves around a user's facial features being scanned every time that they use a photo filter on the app.

A District Court still needs to approve the settlement, according to the settlement administrator.

Residents will be able to submit a settlement claim form but must do so before Nov. 5, 2022. For more information or to see if you qualify, visit the settlement website here.
