Influential and controversial television personality Jerry Springer has died at 79-years-old.
The talk show host had been diagnosed with cancer a few months ago and passed at his home in the Chicago area, according to a family statement.
Running from 1991 until 2018, “The Jerry Springer Show” was known for high-drama antics, with regular confrontations between guests over paternity tests, cheating scandals, and unusual fears that often drove the audience to chant “Jerry! Jerry!” in gleeful schadenfreude.
While Springer was best-known as the host of the eponymous tabloid-style television show, the former attorney had a brief but memorable foray in politics. Springer was elected mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio in 1977 and ran an unsuccessful campaign for Ohio governor in 1982.

Family spokesman Jene Galvin said “Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word. He’s irreplaceable and his loss hurts immensely, but memories of his intellect, heart and humor will live on,” reports WLWT.
