When planning your Independence Day feast, a new study shows it to be far more economical to make the meal at home rather than getting it elsewhere, even at fast-food prices.
According to the Agri-Food Institute, the savings are significant when firing up the backyard grill instead of eating out.
“The current cost of ingredients to prepare a quarter pound hamburger with cheese, tomato and lettuce at home is $2.16 per burger,” the report wrote. ”For a party of 10, the home chef will save nearly $50 -- $47.90, to be exact” on ground meat alone.
And even though the year over year price of potato chips is up 2.7% over last summer, “they are still a good buy for appetizers and a side for burgers,” Wells Fargo experts report, according to Yahoo! News.
The Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports potatoes themselves though are down approximately 96 cents per pound from 2023, so a homemade potato salad or fries could save you even more money.
