Last week, with Christmas just around the corner, the Springfield Police Department in Missouri arrested a juvenile who allegedly shot a victim in the shoulder near the 2000 block of N. Travis Avenue.

Authorities said the unnamed juvenile confronted the victim and two other people about a stolen PlayStation video game console. After a “disturbance” ensued, the suspect allegedly shot the victim with a handgun, resulting in one gunshot wound to the shoulder.

“When officers arrived on scene, the juvenile suspect resisted arrest,” and one officer was injured during the struggle. Eventually, the juvenile was arrested and charged with first degree domestic assault, first degree burglary and second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer.

According to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, juvenile arrests actually decreased 71% from 2011 to 2020. However, murder and negligent manslaughter arrests did increase during that time period and some areas, including the Bay Area and Baltimore, have seen recent youth crime spikes.
