(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- With heavy snow and bitterly cold temperatures in our forecast for later this week, a medical expert offers advice on how to dress to stay safe in those extreme conditions.

Dr. Sindhu Aderson of Northwestern Medicine Immediate Care says the best thing to do is wear several layers of loose fitting clothing and make sure as much of your skin as possible is covered to limit exposure to the bitter cold.

Also wear a hat, glovers and dry socks and shoes, she says.

Dr. Aderson says many people mistakenly think a heavy winter coat is enough to protect them in extreme cold.

She says by wearing multiple layers of clothing, there's a better chance your body will retain heat for a longer period.
