Louisiana man would rather be hospitalized again than get the Covid vaccine

The Bayou State reported 2,041 new confirmed Covid cases Thursday.

A Covid patient in Louisiana would rather endure another stint in the hospital than getting vaccinated against the virus.

"Here I am recovering, getting out of here finally tomorrow. Am I going to get a vaccine? No, because there's too many issues with these vaccines," Scott Roe, a hospital patient still recovering from a Covid infection, told CBS News.

At Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center in Baton Rouge, there are more Covid patients than at any other hospital in the state. Last weekend, the emergency department admitted 23 patients in just 24 hours, filling up an entire floor.

Only one in every three Louisianans is fully vaccinated. Infection rates continue to rise sharply, matching numbers last seen in February.

Roe said he still is not convinced the Covid-19 vaccinations are effective against the virus. Despite catching Covid-19 and developing pneumonia, Roe is still so skeptical of the vaccines he would instead prefer to be stuck in the hospital again than get one.

"Before you got sick, if you would have had a chance to get the vaccine and prevent this, would you have taken the vaccine?" asked CBS correspondent David Begnaud.

"No, I would have gone through this," Roe answered. "Don't shove it down my throat. That's what local, state, federal administration is trying to do - shove it down your throat," calling it "their agenda."

Roe, a Republican, was not aware House Republican Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA.) received the vaccine Sunday, calling it "safe and effective."

"Does his opinion change yours?" Begnaud asked.

"No, it does not," Roe replied.
