WARREN (WWJ) -- A fish was used as a weapon, according to prosecutors, in an assault on an employee at fish counter in Macomb County last weekend.
The unusual incident happened Sunday, April 2, Desi Fruit Market on 9 Nine Mile Rd. in Warren, according to authorities.
The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office said, just before 7:15 p.m., the suspect — later identified as MD Jobul Hussain — approached the fish counter at the market.
When the fish counter clerk explained that the counter had closed early due to the Ramadan holiday, prosecutors said the suspect got angry and begin arguing with the clerk.
The situation escalated when it's alleged that Hussain "assaulted the clerk on the head" with a four pound frozen hilsa fish.
The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment, and Hussain was arrested by Warren Police.
Prosecutors noted in a press release Wednesday that Desi Fruit Market offers fresh fruit, vegetables and fish — including hilsa fish, which is a type of herring.
Hussain, 60, was charged with one count of aggravated assault, a one-year misdemeanor. He was arraigned in Warren District Court on Monday and was given a $5,000 personal bond.
“I never thought I’d have to say this, but if you assault someone with a fish in our county you will be prosecuted. A frozen fish is dangerous if you use it to hit someone on the head,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido, in a statement.
The next court date in this case was not immediately scheduled.
