A man died in Hawthorne, Calif., early Saturday morning after police said he attempted to hit a group of people on a sidewalk, revved up and crashed his truck, and then was yanked from his vehicle and beaten by people in the group.

"Patrons attempted to take the driver out of the vehicle, but the driver was able to accelerate and drove his truck into a nearby building," LASD said in a statement. "Patrons again took the driver out of the vehicle, and a physical altercation ensued."

Hawthorne police arrived around 2:10 a.m., as the crowd still attacked the man. Deputies Miguel Meza and Grace Medrano confired the driver died at the scene from blunt-force trauma.

Authorities questioned people who attacked the driver and are awaiting autopsy results to confirm his cause of death.

The sheriff's department identified the deceased as a man roughly 40-years old.
