On Saturday night, after receiving the Richard M. Nixon Award, Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R) gave a speech that touched on numerous bizarre topics, leaving many confused.
The award was given by the New York Young Republican Club and is given to “a citizen who exemplifies the fundamental ideals of Americanism.”
But after being given the honor, Greene began a rant about several topics, including sex toys being sold in department stores.
“By the way, you can pick up a butt plug or a dildo at Target and CVS nowadays,” Greene said. “I don't even know how we got here. This is the state that we're living in right now.”
The crowd appeared thrown off by the comment from the congresswoman, with a few people cheering and others sitting in silence.
Greene also went on to talk about her efforts to impeach President Joe Biden, which she said has been unsuccessful so far.
“I think I’ve introduced like 7 or 8 or, I don’t know where I’m at now, Articles of Impeachment on Joe Biden over the last two years,” Greene said. “And while I don’t want to impeach a president for political reasons, I definitely think Biden should be impeached.”
Where Greene really went off the rails was when she started talking about the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Greene talked about how she had been accused of being a part of the insurrection, saying that it would have gone better had she planned it.
“I got to tell you something. If Steve Bannon and I had organized that, we would have won. Not to mention, it would’ve been armed,” Greene said.
The White House has commented, condemning Greene for her comments.
“It goes against our fundamental values as a country for a member of Congress to wish that the carnage of Jan. 6 had been worse, & to boast that she would have succeeded in an armed insurrection against the United States government,” White House officials said in a statement.
On Monday, Greene released a statement about her comments, saying “the White House needs to learn how sarcasm works.”
“Every day, I receive violent threats against my life simply because Democrats & the media have lied and smeared my character for the past 2 years,” Greene said in her statement. “Including threats resulting in actual arrests with criminal charges & threats against my home in an attempt to have me killed.”
