A McDonald’s advertisement in England may have only been trying to promote one of the fast food chain’s chicken sandwiches, but the location of the ad has left many upset.
Across the street from the advertisement that features the “McCrispy” sandwich is the Penmount Crematorium, according to reports from local media.
Residents of Cornwall, England, where the crematorium and the ad were located, were not too happy about the coincidental placement of the bus stop poster.
Last week, one woman spoke with the local outlet Cornwall Live, saying that it was “tasteless” to put the poster in its location even though she “can see the funny side.”
“I’m sure some grieving family members won’t like to see it when visiting Penmount for the funeral and cremation of a loved one,” the woman told the media outlet.
However, McDonald’s says that it had not known the ad would be placed at the particular bus stop, maintaining it was not intentional and that it would be removed
“We were unaware of the road sign in the vicinity of this bus stop,” a spokesperson told Business Insider last week. “However, in light of the concerns raised by Cornwall Live, we have asked for our advertisement to be removed.”
Cornwall Live did joke about “rumors” that it would be replaced with a Burger King poster promoting its flamed grilled burgers. However, the outlet did not say that this was true.
Not everyone seemed upset with the location of the ad, as many instead shared their displeasure with the city council for allowing a retirement home to be built next to the crematorium.
“Anyone who doesn’t find this funny are the same people that were taken into consideration when the Penmount Hotel in Newquay became Penberthy Care Home,” one person shared with the outlet. “It was thought some wouldn’t see the funny side of a building full of older folk sharing the same name as the corporation body furnace.”
Online, some shared enjoyment for the poster, with one user writing, “My parents are in this crematorium. My old man had a brilliant sense of humor, so I’m sure he would have chuckled at this!”
McDonald’s has not responded to a request for further comment from numerous media outlets following its initial statement.
In an update to the story, Cornwall Live shared that the poster had been replaced at the bus stop, with a poster now advertising for something else.
