Billionaire Elon Musk is refuting reports that said he was going to donate $45 million a month to former President Donald Trump, saying on Tuesday that he is going to be supporting the Republican nominee at “a much lower level.”
After the assassination attempt on Trump, reports from the Wall Street Journal shared that Musk had committed to donating the $45 million figure to America PAC, which he founded alongside other notable conservative donors.
The reported commitment came the same day that Trump named Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) his 2024 running mate.
However, during an interview with conservative commentator Jordan Peterson that aired on Tuesday, Musk seemed to refute the reports from the Journal.
“What’s been reported in the media is simply not true,” he said.
Musk then took to his social media site X to offer more insight, saying he is backing America PAC but did not confirm or deny the amount he would be giving.
“I am making some donations to America PAC, but at a much lower level, and the key values of the PAC are supporting a meritocracy & individual freedom,” he wrote. “Republicans are mostly, but not entirely, on the side of merit & freedom.”
Musk broke a previous promise when he offered his commitment to Trump, no longer staying out of the 2024 election, in the hours after Trump survived the shooting at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
“I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery,” Musk wrote in a post on X earlier this month.
