Barack and Michelle Obama endorse Kamala Harris for president: here's what they said

The Obamas are endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for president.

In a video showing Harris getting the call from the couple, the former president said, "Michelle and I couldn't be prouder to endorse you and to do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office."

The former first lady chimed in saying, "I can't have this phone call without saying to my girl Kamala: I am proud of you. This is going to be historic."

Harris was left grinning ear to ear as she thanked the couple for their support, as well as their friendship and guidance over the years.

"This means so much to me. I am looking forward to doing this with the two of you," she said, adding, "We're going to have some fun with this, too, aren't we?"

The call came just days after Harris launched her campaign after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race.

The official nod from the Obamas comes as Harris made clear she expects to see former President Donald Trump soon on a debate stage. In a statement late Thursday, the Trump campaign said debate details cannot be finalized until Democrats formally decide on their nominee.

The party is expected to nominate Harris by August 7 in order to meet a deadline to ensure her name is on Election Day ballots nationwide. The Democratic National Convention begins on Aug. 19 in Chicago.
