Janae Hairston’s parents can be heard begging their 16-year-old daughter to wake up in a recorded 911 call from early Wednesday morning.
Her father – who believed she was a home intruder – had shot her.
Emergency responders were at her Columbus, Ohio, home within minutes of the 4:30 a.m. call, said The Columbus Dispatch. Around an hour after Hairston was transported to Mount Carmel East Hospital, Hairston died from the gunshot wounds she sustained.
Her parents were on the call for eight minutes and explained that her father accidentally shot her in the chest in the garage of their home.
They could also be heard asking her why she was in the garage.
“My husband made a mistake and shot her because he thought she was an intruder,” Hairston’s mother said. “She was in our garage and my husband just didn’t know what was going on. Oh, my God.”
Police said the home’s security system had been activated, said the Dispatch.
Hairston was a junior at Canal Winchester High School in Canal Winchester, Ohio, said the outlet. Her social media profile showed that she recently posted about getting a job and her plans for college.
A note to families of students at her school said counselors would be made available when students return from winter break.
As of Saturday, detectives were still investigating the incident. It is the seventh homicide to be reported in Columbus within a week and the third in three days, the Dispatch said.
Outside of Ohio, another accidental shooting was recently reported in North Carolina, according to NBC News. In that case, a police officer allegedly accidentally shot his 15-year-old son in the head.
Though the injury was life-threatening, the boy was still alive and in critical condition as of Wednesday. His father is an unidentified officer works for the Jacksonville Police Department and is on administrative leave
