Planet Fitness offers everyone in L.A. County free access to showers, WiFi, more as wildfires rage

The fitness chain Planet Fitness is opening its doors to everyone in Los Angeles County, providing access to showers and WiFi as fires continue to burn across the southern part of the state.

The fitness chain noted that its offering to those affected by the fires and first responders will be valid until Jan. 15 and at dozens of locations.

The company shared that it wanted to provide residents who have lost their homes or been displaced with basic necessities and make sure first responders felt supported.

Residents are being urged to contact their local club in order to find out the most up-to-date information. You can locate the nearest club here.

So far, the fire has claimed the lives of at least five people, and about 130,000 people are under evacuation warnings or orders.

Currently, five fires are still burning, the largest of which is the Palisades Fire, which has burned across the seafront Pacific Palisades region between Malibu and Santa Monica. The Eaton Fire has burned more than 10,600 acres in the Altadena neighborhood. The Hurst Fire and Lidia Fire are still ablaze, burning 855 and 348 acres, respectively. The last fire is the Sunset Fire, which is currently stretching across 43 acres in the Hollywood Hills.

The fires started on Tuesday and have since destroyed almost 2,000 structures in the southern California region.

While evacuation orders have been put in place in several regions, things have gotten better as the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department lifted the evacuation zone for most of the Sunset Fire.

Firefighters have also received some relief from the extraordinarily high winds that fanned the flames and tossed embers for miles on Wednesday.

Brent Pascua, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection battalion chief, shared with CNN how better weather has impacted the fight.

“What a welcome sight,” Pascua told CNN. “What this fire so desperately needed was a break in these winds so that we can actually get some containment now on this fire.”
