Body camera footage from a police interaction that left a man dead in Canton, Ohio, earlier this month has recently gone viral, with many pointing out similarities to George Floyd and his death at the hands of Minneapolis police.
The 36-minute clip, released by several media outlets, shows Frank Tyson, 53, interacting with officers from the Canton Police Department, who were investigating him for potentially leaving the scene of a single-car accident on April 18.
The clip starts with a patrol officer finding a car that had struck an electrical pole. The officer spoke with a bystander, who said the driver had left the car after the accident and fled into a nearby bar.
Officers can then be seen entering the bar, where they find Tyson. It’s at this point where the altercation begins, as the officers can be seen attempting to restrain him by the arms as he shouts, “They are trying to kill me.”
Eventually, officers were able to wrestle him to the ground and place him in handcuffs, while one officer can be seen placing a knee on his back near his neck for nearly 30 seconds.
“I can’t breathe. I can’t... get off my neck,” Tyson could be heard saying, while officers responded with “Calm down” and “You’re fine” before getting up.
However, the video then shows Tyson on the ground motionless for nearly six minutes while officers talk to bar patrons.
They then went to check on Tyson as he appeared unresponsive and could be heard saying, “Is he breathing?”
Eight minutes after being placed in handcuffs, officers attempted CPR, calling for paramedics who eventually showed up and took him to a local hospital.
Officers also attempted to administer Tyson a dose of Narcan before he was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The department has since placed two officers, Beau Schoenegge and Camden Burch, on administrative leave while the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation investigates the incident, CBS News reported.
That investigation remains ongoing.
