It's no surprise that people love pizza, but just how much we love it may come as a shock: A new poll has found the average American eats at least 180 slices of pizza a year.
The poll, conducted by OnePoll and commissioned by Amazon Fresh, found that the average person can eat over half of an entire pizza — noted as five slices — by themselves in a single sitting -- and eats pizza at least three times in any given month.
The survey also found that Americans are more likely to pick a frozen pizza (30%) over a fresh pizza at a restaurant (26%) or even delivery (16%).
While pizza is a polarizing food, with many debating what toppings can or cannot go on it, a majority (74%) say it can be served for any meal of the day. In fact, the pollsters found that 69% like to eat pizza for breakfast.
The food is so popular that 25% said they would serve it at their wedding.
While the poll examined the love Americans have for pizza, it dove deep into pizza eating habits and what people prefer.
Pollsters were able to create the “perfect” pizza thanks to the preferences of respondents, as 65% of respondents prefer a circular-shaped pizza, 32% like thick crust, and 61% prefer tomato sauce.
As for toppings, the poll found that mozzarella (59%), pepperoni (51%), sausage (42%), mushrooms (37%) and parmesan (37%) would finish off the pie.
The worst toppings for pizza were also examined by the pollsters, as Americans would say no if the pie had avocado (39%), mac and cheese (36%), eggplant (36%), pineapple (27%), or fried chicken (26%).
When it comes to the temperature of leftovers, cold pizza eaters were the odd man out, with only 18% not reheating, while 35% use the microwave and 30% use the stove.
The state-by-state poll of 5,000 US adults also looked at how Americans eat their pizza, with those in Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, Missouri, Ohio, and Utah being the most likely to use a knife and fork.
