Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) said he would have pardoned former President Donald Trump if he were President Joe Biden, saying it would show he was the bigger person.
Romney’s comments came while speaking with MSNBC’s “The 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle” on Wednesday.
“Had I been President Biden, when the Justice Department brought out indictments, I would have immediately pardoned him. I’d have pardoned President Trump,” Romney said.
The former Republican nominee said the move would have made Biden look like “the big guy” and Trump “the little guy.”
Romney’s comments were regarding Trump’s two federal indictments brought against him by special counsel Jack Smith. One indictment was for his alleged mishandling of classified documents, and the other was for his efforts to stay in power after losing the 2020 presidential election.
Romney said that he doesn’t think either of the two cases will be resolved before November.
“And No. 2, it’s not going to get resolved before the election. It’s not going to have an impact before the election. And, frankly, the country doesn’t want to have to go through prosecuting a former president,” Romney said.
However, Romney said he doesn’t think it matters, as the American people “have recognized” some facts of the cases.
“I think they realize he’s been lying about the election in 2020,” Romney said. “They know those things. So these things are not changing the public attitude. And, frankly, we ought to get beyond these and focus on the big issues that really matter to the American people, our inflation, our border, what’s happening around the world, America’s involvement in the world.”
