After nearly three decades, authorities may finally be closer to solving the murder of beloved rapper Tupac Shakur.

According to a Tuesday report from the Associated Press, authorities in Nevada confirmed that they served a search warrant in connection with the long-unsolved killing. Shakur was just 25 when he was fatally hit in a 1996 drive-by shooting.

“The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said the search warrant was executed in the nearby city of Henderson,” said the AP. “The department did not provide further details on the search, citing the open investigation.”

Audacy confirmed this report with the police department.

Nevada doesn’t have a statute of limitations for prosecuting homicide cases, the AP noted. Shakur was in a vehicle at a red light near the Las Vegas strip when he was shot by someone inside a black vehicle. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but died a week after the shooting.

Shakur had already established a successful career by the time he died, and his music is still popular today. Per the 2Pac website, he remains “one of the most popular artists in history, with over 75 million records sold worldwide,” and much of his music was released after his murder.

After his death, a number of conspiracy theories that Shakur is still alive bloomed. Esquire catalogued these in 2018.

Earlier this month, Shakur received a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

“His music has had such a cultural impact. Tupac’s music and lyrics truly resonated deeply with the people from various backgrounds, especially those who lived in marginalized community. He often addressed social inequality, police brutality, racial injustices, which are still prevalent today,” said Rocky Buccano, a long-time hip hop DJ who spoke to KNX Newsradio about Shakur’s lasting influence.
