Authorities are investigating a school bus crash in Kentucky that sent 18 children and the driver to the hospital with injuries ranging from minor to critical.

The crash happened around 7:20 a.m. Monday in Salyersville, a rural area about 97 miles east of Lexington.

Kentucky State Police say the bus was traveling along a state highway when it went off the roadway, crashed over an embankment and rolled onto its side. No other vehicles were involved.

The bus was carrying 18 elementary, middle, and high school students. The children and the driver had "varying degrees of injuries" and were transported to area hospitals "by ambulance or helicopter," according to Magoffin County Schools.

Gov. Andy Beshear posted about he crash on Facebook, calling it "tough news."

"Please join me in praying for all those involved," he said.

The school district issued an update Tuesday, saying 11 students had been treated and released from the hospital.

"The remaining students and driver are still hospitalized with varying injuries," the statement said. "We are doing our best to support and communicate with each of these families during this time."

Three students and the bus driver were reported in critical condition, according to WLEX.

The accident remains under investigation by the Kentucky State Police.
