Today is the day referenced in Don McLean's epic song "American Pie" as the "day the music died." Don McLean has always been very reluctant to discuss the lyrics in "American Pie," but in a 2019 interview, I did get Don to talk about the lyrics and what he said about it was interesting.
I asked what he was feeling and thinking as he was composing the nearly 9-minute classic and he gave an answer nearly as long.
McLean left little doubt that February 3 is the "day the music died" for him, and gave an incredibly articulate and thoughtful response that expressed his great disappointment in the great political divide, both in 1971 when the song was released - and today.
