As the shortage of peppers used to make the famous Sriracha sauce continues to drag on, prices are going through the roof, reaching more than $100 in some places.
Huy Fong Foods, the company that makes the iconic sauce, has been dealing with a years-long shortage of chilis it uses. This has resulted in production problems, creating shortages across the globe.
Now, on sites like eBay, prices have reached as high as $70, and on Amazon, upwards of $117, with people paying whatever they can for the famous rooster bottles.
The current prices for the iconic red sauce is a bit extreme, as they typically go for approximately $5, depending on the size and where they are sold.
Huy Fong Foods shared with CNN that the company has been forced to slow production of its flagship product due to the shortage of raw materials.
A spokesperson said that though production did begin again last fall, they still have a limited number of materials and no timetable for when supply will go back to normal.
“We are grateful for your continued patience and understanding during this unprecedented inventory shortage,” a Huy Fong spokesperson said.
The issues at the company have continued for the past three years, as Huy Fong says its chili peppers have consistently been in short supply since 2020.
The crop yield last year was so bad that Huy Fong was forced to temporarily stop orders altogether, as it couldn’t produce its products.
The company shared that it is still working to get its products back on shelves.
“We are currently working on trying to avoid future shortages,” a Huy Fong spokesperson said.
