In a tweet on Wednesday night, Tim Allen, the iconic voice of Buzz Lightyear, confirmed that Disney will be making a fifth movie in the Toy Story franchise and that he will be returning to his iconic role.
“See ya soon Woody, you are a sad strange little man and you have my pity. And off we go to a number 5! To infinity and beyond!” Allen tweeted, with a photo of his Buzz Lightyear.
The movie announcement comes after the space ranger had his own solo movie last year. However, it saw the character voiced by Chris Evans and not Allen, which left many fans displeased.
In Disney’s defense, 2022’s film Lightyear was an origin story for the toy. The film’s cast explained that the movie was what inspired the toy in the Toy Story world.
Nonetheless, Allen confirmed his return to the franchise after the movie was announced during a quarterly earnings call by top Disney executive Bob Iger.
Along with the fifth Toy Story film, Iger also announced that the fan-favorite franchises Zootopia and Frozen would also have sequels made.
The decision to continue the Toy Story franchise, after the fourth film seemed to put a bow on everything, makes sense for the company as it looks to rebound after the pandemic and a number of low-performing films, that included Lightyear.
Overall the films have produced over $3.3 billion worldwide, and with Iger stepping back into his role as the CEO of the company after an almost three-year absence, more changes are expected to come for Disney.
