Just as summer salad season gets into swing, it's time to check the fridge because Ray & Mascari Inc. is recalling its “4-Count Vine Ripe Tomatoes” due to potential salmonella contamination.

The recalled tomatoes were sold by Gordon Food Service Stores in 11 states. Hanshaw & Capling Farms initiated the recall due to the possible presence of salmonella in their facility. The states in which they were sold include New York, Illinois, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

The tomatoes were sold in plastic clamshells and had a VINE RIPE TOMATOES label containing "Packed by Ray & Mascari Inc."

Consumers who purchased the product should discard it, per the FDA, and contact Ray & Mascari Inc. with any questions or reports of illness.

If you spot it in the fridge, don't risk it! Experts say salmonella can cause serious infections and even death in the elderly or frail or anyone with a compromised immune system. Even healthy people infected will experience, including fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
