Trump is losing his coalition of Gen Z men: polls

Young men who are part of Generation Z (currently aged 13 through 28) in the U.S. have reportedly been leaning right politically and helped President Donald Trump win the 2024 election. However, recent polls show that Trump’s popularity among young voters might be slipping.

CBS News/YouGov polling data collected from 2,342 adults last Wednesday through last Friday found that 53% of men disapprove of the way Trump has handled the job so far, along with 72% of respondents under age 30. Women still had a higher disapproval rating for Trump at 58%, while at least half of all age groups, including voters over age 65, disapproved of Trump’s job.

Overall, Trump’s approval rating was at just 42%, based on that poll. Majorities also disproved of the way he has handled the economy, inflation, immigration and the way he has handled the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

After Trump’s announcement that the U.S. intervened with a military conflict in Iran last month, Audacy reported that the move was not very popular with young voters. Per the CBS/YouGov poll, 71% of voters under 30 disproved of the way Trump is handling conflict with Iran, as well as 51% of men.

Of course, economic issues are often top-of-mind for voters. Most of the respondents said the economy was doing fairly bad (29%) or very bad (33%) and 55% said they think it is getting worse and 50% said Trump’s policies are making them financially worse-off.

A 48% plurality also said that Trump is to blame for the state of affairs rather than former President Joe Biden. At the same time. 53% said that Trump is doing the same things he promised to do on the campaign trail.

According to Newsweek, this “data showed that the collapse in support for Trump among Gen Z voters has been both sharp and steady.”

It’s also not the only recent poll that found younger voters are critical of Trump. The Economist/YouGov polling of 1,729 U.S. adults conducted between last Friday and this Monday found that 66% of 18 to 29-year-olds disapprove of the how the president is handling his job.

The Daily Beast even reported that poll indicated that “Gen Z voters have all but abandoned their support” for Trump and likened the turnaround to “buyers’ remorse.”
